Does anyone have pics of the crystal globe or big wood elephant from the Oosterdam ship; part of Holland Amer

I was on a cruise in Alaska last week and amid all the excitement I forgot to take pics of 2 amazing things aboard the ship Oosterdam;part of Holland America's fleet. One is the huge crystal globe hanging above the lobby and the other is the giant painted wooden elephant on one of the upper floors. Does anyone have pics of these things or know where I can find them? Thanks!

Honeymoon, holland america, first cruise, some feedback please?

Hey, just preparing for our honeymoon, and was hoping to get some feedback.

Our plan for our dream honeymoon is to head out on april 12 (the day after our wedding), from salt lake to CA and take a cruise on the Holland America Oosterdam, 7 day, mexican riviera. We managed to find a deal for a veranda room, which we are really excited about, for about 699$ (before taxes, tips, fuel charge, etc.) and flights for about 210$ (before taxes etc.)(don't worry we've added it all up, taxi too).

One travel agent (younger lady) expressed the concern that we wouldn't like holland america because it had too old a crowd, and stuffy. Another (older lady) said we would love it.

As for us, we aren't huge party people. We don't drink, our preferred dance is swing & ballroom, the library & culinary arts center's, & the art are a lot more attractive to us. We don't mind dressing nice, and we love older people. The cruise got dinged for lack of kids entertainment & shore excursions, but what do we care?

Answer :
My husband and I love Holland America Line, and we're younger working professionals. Oosterdam was actually the first cruise ship we were on together, and it was perfect for us. We loved the Culinary Arts Center, the fine dining, and the generally more refined atmosphere on HAL.

Like a lot of people, your travel agent associates "young" with "party" and I think you're right to recognize that that's not always right.

I think you'll have a great time.

Three resources I'd recommend:
- Savvy Guide to Holland America Line, which will give you a bit more information into "what it's like"
http://www.cruisesavvy.com/savvyguide/ho…

- A Sept 2007 Cruise Report from Oosterdam's sister ship, Noordam, which may give you a sense of the atmosphere onboard.
http://www.cruisesavvy.com/journals/pj/2…

-The "know before you go" guide. It's not specific to HAL, but it has packing suggestions, onboard cell phone information, etc:
http://www.cruisesavvy.com/savvyguide/kn…

Answer :
Okay i know you say you got a good deal but there's a HUGE promo deal going on at http://www.ticketsavvy.com for Holland America Cruise line

go to http://www.ticketsavvy.com to book your cruise

and for more info on the promo go to:

Answer :
We took our first cruise (14 days in the Caribbean) with Holland America, and loved it. The crowd might be a bit older than say, Carnival, but definitely not "stuffy". More refined perhaps. One major plus, there are fewer noisy kids running around the pool(s) and dining rooms! We enjoyed our trip so much we're going on another cruise (HAL) in March. I'd say "have fun", but you can't help but do so!

Which Line should I go on? Holland America, oosterdam. Or Norwegian Spirit?

I'm going on a cruise to mexico and I can't decide which cruise I want to go on. When you look at the pictures they both seem so breathtaking. They're both 7 days, and both to mexico. The oosterdam for the mexican rivera, and The Norwegian Spirit goes to the gulf of mexico. I'm so confused to check out the pictures that I've seen for both just click the links.

http://travel.travelocity.com/ecruise/CruiseDetailsPublicArea.do?sailing_date=Dec+20%2C+2008&resSt=&pagerIndex=&resultsIndex=0&lead_price=449.00&currency=USD&gtCty=&cruiseId=2693&promolink=&deckId=&pPc=&action_code=Select&price=&srRt=

that was for the oosterdam,

this one is for NLC:

Answer :
I have cruised on the NCL spirit but on a different itinerary. Its a nice ship but its not as nice as the Holland America ship. The HA ship was just launched in 2003 and the other was launched some time before that. The cabins on HA are larger and much nicer.

I have also done the Mexican Rivera cruise out of San Diego, but on a NCL ship rather than HA. Our cruise did the same port stops except we also did Acapulco. The Mexican Rivera is nice but I don't think its as nice as in the Caribbean if you want beach time to enjoy swimming, sunning and just getting wet. The Caribbean beaches are much prettier then those on the Pacific side of Mexico. The place that I liked best on the Pacific side was Cabo. The other places were OK.

You are comparing here two different cruise lines as well as two different itineraries. I have been on many NCL cruises but I don't care for their "freestyle" cruising at all. Freestyle means that the cruise is very informal and you do not select a time for dinner but just go any time after about 6:00 PM that you want. But I experienced some problems with that; like never having the same wait staff and table, and some laxity in service.

You can actually request the same type dinner procedure on Holland America if that's what you like. But as someone who has done almost 20 cruises during the past 15 or so years I prefer the traditional (old style) cruising where I have "my" table and "my" wait staff and I enjoy all of the benefits that brings in the way of personalized service, even them addressing me by name rather than as "sir/madam".

So my recommendation is the Holland America cruise because the ship is newer, the cabins and ship will be better, the food and service will be better, the cruise will be more special because its more upscale and classy. The HA line has older and more reserved passengers. Go on the HA cruise.

Answer :
It sounds like maybe you need to do a little research. These cruises are totally different - one is on the Pacific coast, the other is in the Caribbean, if your info is accurate.

Holland is much more upscale than NCL - better food and service - but will probably be much quieter. Holland tends to have older, more well-traveled passengers.

Go to your library and get a book on cruising and/or go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Boards" and/or "Reviews" [be sure to click on passenger reviews, too] and get all the info you could possibly want.

Have fun!

June 28th Cruise on Oosterdam-Balcony or inside. Any feedback on Oosterdam ship?

June 28th Cruise on Oosterdam-Balcony or inside. Any feedback on Oosterdam ship?

Answer :
Cruising the Inside passage is much more of an experience if you have an outside balcony cabin, you can watch the stunning scenery from the comfort of your cabin.
The choice of cabin is entirely yours but when we are cruising we don't actually spend much time our cabin, just washing and sleeping. The money we save on cabin price goes towards the cost of the tours etc:
The difference in price between a good balcony cabin and an inside cabin on that cruise is approx $1000.
There are two sites that I use for feedback on cruises and ships:
http://smillay.cruisesinc.com/travel/cru…
and http://www.cruisecritic.com both sites are good all the information you need from people who have been there and done it.

Answer :
I'd guess by the date you're going to Alaska, in which case if you CAN get a balcony, go for it. There's something extra-special about watching the glaciers and other beautiful scenery from the privacy of your own balcony.

BTW, I LOVE Oosterdam. It was my (now) husband's first cruise, so maybe I'm biased by that, but she's a great ship.

If by any chance you'd be willing to share any pictures / stories of your trip please let me know. It's relatively easy to do directly on our site:
http://www.cruisesavvy.com/journals
That said, I really regret not having pictures of that ship (all our pics were family snapshots) so I'd be more than happy to help with uploading or whatever, just ping me through my Yahoo profile.

And if you have any other Qs about Oosterdam, please don't hesitate to ask.

ADDITION: Here's a review with lots of pictures of Zuiderdam, which is OS' sister ship. Slightly different decor, but very similar:
http://www.cruisesavvy.com/journals/pj/2…

Answer :
Well, that's a matter of priorities, usually. Some people won't cruise without a balcony, others buy an inside because they want to spend their money on other aspects of the cruise and, as they say, "You don't spend that much time in the room, anyway!"

However, from what I've read, many people feel it is well-worth getting a balcony for an Alaska cruise - provided you get it on the "right" side of the ship [i.e. the side that will be facing the mainland].

For info on the Oosterdam in particular, go to CruiseCritic.com, click on "Reviews" at the top of the page, then enter the name. Be sure and click on "Member Reviews", too, as cruisers post their reviews of the ships there.

CC also has many tips, etc. in the "Boards" section.

Have a great cruise.

Answer :
We saw the Oosterdam from the outside when we departed San Diego on the Carnival Spirit. The Oosterdam is a full sized ship. You need to type in Holland America Oosterdam on a Yahoo search for images. Also at Holland America's website and click on ships, then on Oosterdam.

Answer :
Pretty good chance of a good weather in June, July in Alaska! Balcony would be tempting but Oosterdam is a very good ship and has enough viewing areas to admire the beauty.

Inside will save you money which you can well spend on various excursions on shore!

Majestic Gems
Juneau.

Answer :
If in fact you are going to Alaska then a balcony is a WASTE. Why would you only want to see 1 side of things? Like watching a movie with 1 eye closed. Too much scenery & wildlife & there is no way to know when or where. I have been on 23 cruises there & always get an inside room. Way TOO much to see & people to meet on deck. However your money & vacation do what you think is best for you.
Oosterdam is a great ship with excellent service, staff & food.
Enjoy.
